BASA members often get asked to do talks at schools - especially at Black History Month. Here again schools do have funds for specialist visits/consultation. They would pay an artist to demonstrate say African Batik or a ceramic technique - why not a historian of Black or Asian history? After all culture is culture and it costs.

I forgot to mention, I was NOT offered payment for the interview and I paid my own expenses. The producer did offer me a taxi home (from the location, a hotel in Mayfair) if I agreed to wait an hour...but I was tired and just wanted to leave. However, I made the crew laugh by announcing: "F*** that. I can't be bothered to wait an hour. I'll get the number 12 bendy bus to Peckham instead. I've got an Oyster card!"

I know this is unsatisfactory and that we should be asking for fees and expenses, but sometimes the sheer EFFORT of this is just not worth the aggro involved because you know the cheque doesn't exist. For the record, I HAVER insisted on payments and taxis in the past, and succeeded, but with this project I just had the feeling I was wasting my time when I asked and the reply was not encouraging. I agreed to do the interview for the experience, and to have a bit of fun. I'm not a fan of Hutch. But I agree with you. BASA members should not sell themselves short, and should request payment and travel expenses.
