Applications are invited for a talented and enthusiastic medical
statistician to provide statistical and data management support for the
Antiretroviral Therapy Cohort Collaboration (ART-CC), a large international
collaboration studying the prognosis of patients treated for HIV-infection
funded by the Medical Research Council. This post is an excellent
opportunity for you to develop research and analytical skills, as well as
contributing to high profile publications.

The University of Bristol Department of Social Medicine is a leading centre
for research and teaching in epidemiology, public health and health
services research. It was awarded the top 5* grade in the 2001 Research
Assessment Exercise. The primary characteristic of research in the
Department is that it is collaborative and multi-disciplinary. There is a
thriving team of some 20 medical statisticians.

ART-CC is a successful and well-established research project (see
www.art-cohort-collaboration.org). The collaboration has published
prognostic models for HIV disease progression from start of treatment and
taking into account initial response to treatment, compared survival
according to different drug regimens, estimated improvements in life
expectancy and compared mortality rates in HIV-infected persons with that
of the general population. Data from ART-CC have been used to inform
treatment guidelines and for comparison with outcomes in resource-poor
settings. Future work will develop the prognostic models to account for
changes in patient demographics, between cohort heterogeneity and new drug
regimens. Comparisons between outcomes from observational cohorts from
ART-CC and that from randomised clinical trials are planned. Since
treatment for HIV infection is lifelong once started, there is a continuing
need to monitor and evaluate treatment outcomes in those with longer
exposure to antiretroviral therapy.

You will have a higher degree in medical statistics or a closely related
discipline, or equivalent research experience. The appointment will be
full-time on Grade I or Grade J of the University's new grade structure,
depending on experience, and is for two years. While this is a fixed-term
contract, there may be opportunities to continue working in the Department
beyond this date.
