However, we should also bear in mind that the first Institutional Research Conference was held this year at Southampton Solent and a follow-up conference has already been planned to be held at Sheffield Hallam in July next year. There certainly is significant overlap between Institutional Research and Planning so there may be merit in extending discussions with the IR organisers too. That might include something as simple as mutual support groups, where the face-to-face interaction would stimulate exchange of a wider range of knowledge and ideas. On the second, I couldn't agree more: the various specialist groups do a good job, but they and their members may not see the need to consult planners on a particular issue. It would be helpful to the sector as a whole if the planners were automatically part of consultations or other discussions for just the reasons you give. The general view from the Forum was that this would be welcomed and I wanted to canvas further within the community to see whether this was a generally held view. Additionally, it has become clear recently that the lack of a national recognised 'Planners Group' means that there are occasions (e.g. when HESA is reviewing its returns) when Planning does not have a voice around the table. Clearly this is not only an issue in respect of the student returns but also in terms of having someone involved who understands the interplay between the different returns and the potential impacts on league tables etc. The view at Planning Forum was that it would be useful to develop such a group. I would be grateful for any comments people have, either to me directly or back to the list.
