Dear All,
Further to
Moira’s email on the Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning.
I managed this Commission in my previous job at NIACE. There were 47 recommendations,
for the whole sector, in the final report. A summary of which can be
accessed below:
http://www.niace.org.uk/projects/commissionfordisabledstaff/Default.htm
Eleven key
recommendations have been selected by the Lifelong Learning Sector Skills
Council, along with government and representative agencies, to be central to improving
the sectors performance on disabled staff. These eleven recommendations
will be launched shortly in the form of a public commitment that all lifelong
learning related organisations will be asked to sign up to. The current
web page is linked below. I will send further details around once the ‘Commitment’
is fully launched.

This is along
winded way of responding to your email
Fehmeeda! It is hoped
that by improving the experiences of disabled staff that disclosure rates might
also improve as an indirect consequence.
Best wishes

Hi Fehmeeda,
Below is a
quote from the publication "From compliance to culture
change:
disabled people working in lifelong learning Interim Report of the Commission
for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning"
"Data
from LLUK suggest that between 1.1 per cent and 3.1 per cent of disabled staff
have declared a disability in all regions apart from Yorkshire and Humberside
who have identified 4.0 per cent of staff. Our data from human resource and
senior managers show average disclosure rates similar to the LLUK analysis of
2.8 per cent."
Best wishes,
Moira

Disability disclosure rate
Dear All,
We are looking
at ways to improve our disability disclosure rate for staff (which is currently
less than 3%). We have developed a website that is dedicated to providing
details of support for staff, clarified the procedures on disclosure and
introduced the Disability Confident programme as part of induction as well as
focused on other developmental activities to raise awareness of disability
equality. We are also looking to carry out at Data Capture Exercise in
respect of disability over the coming year.
I was just
wondering if there is a benchmark for the HE sector in terms of disclosure that
we should be aspiring to? Is there a HE sector average for disclosure?
Best wishes
Fehmeeda
