Fascinating stuff Roger, did they send you, by any chance, a hair sample of King George the 3rd as well?!!
Arsenic, in the olden ages, used to be a panacea for curing many ailments and not only for deliberate poisoning plots of mad kings and leaders.
And what is this neutron irradiation stuff supposed to do to the hair sample? please be kind and explain to the ignorant masses.

Best wishes

Mohammad

Subject: Re: Hair analysis for mineral deficiency detection

Many years ago - in my salad days - I was supplied with some strands of Napolean's hair, which I cut up into short lengths, sealed them in quartz ampoules and sent them off to Harwell for neutron irradiation.  On their return I analysed them for the presence of arsenic.

As far as I can recall  - though arsenic in the hair could be identified - the results were inconclusive  with regard to ingestion time.

Not a routine procedure of course.

With best regards,

Roger Ekins

Dear all,

Does anyone know where I can find evidence for the use of hair analysis in the detection of mineral deficiency? (trace element and Ca/Mg/PO4)

Many thanks
Katy
