Iolo Williams - the North Walian equivalent of Bill Oddy, who the ladies find particuarly attractive (Iolo that is not Bill!)

Seriously though, what has happened to the Silent Valley, or Cwm Merddog, to give it its official title? I remember running up there on an early, clear August morning, in the mid seventies, and was greeted by what can only be described as a lunar landscape. Have the tips been completely cleared by now?

Wedyn, o chwilio am "Silent Valley" + Merddog, gwelais http://www.wildlifetrust.org.uk/gwent/SilentValleySoFar.htm

Located just behind the village of Cwm near Ebbw Vale lies a prime example of nature 'fighting back'. This beautiful and tranquil (after all that is how it got its name) site was established in early 1998 with the merging of the Cwm Merddog and Coed Tyn-y-gelli woodlands. It covers approximately 50ha and contains numerous plant communities from grassland to wetlands, heaths and of course woodlands. The area was once farmed, indeed the name Merddog is believed to be a corruption of the name of the old farm that used to be here, Troed y Rhiw y Myrdd Fach, which translated means 'the foot of the myriad little hills'.

  Hello Dorothy
I think you may be referring to Cwm Merddog which together
with Nant Merddogg were in the area where Silent valley is today.
There was a Cwm Merddog farm nearby.
Have a look at the old -maps website.
  http://www.old-maps.co.uk/

Do a seach for Cwm. Select the Monmouthshire one, and go to enlarged view.
Cwm Merddog Farm is just to the north of Cwm. Cwm and Nant Merddog are to
  the
north east of the farm. Your description of the location would appear to be
accurate. The Mountains would be to the East and North.

In 1841 and 1851 the farm was occupied by a Trew family,
and was enumerated as Cwm in 41 and Cwmryddach in 51.
I think the enumeration district is missing in 1861 among the many
lost records in Momouthshire in that year.
By 71 the property seems to have been subdivided in that there are three
adjacent Cwm or Coom farms none with an Edwards family.
