Dear Colleague,

Dear Colleague,

We are pleased to offer you the opportunity to attend the following courses:

1.       Essentials of Survey Design and Implementation

2.       Methods for Missing Data

3.       Survey Data Analysis 1: Descriptive and Inferential Statistics

1.       Essentials of Survey Design and Implementation (Held in Edinburgh 29th – 31st October 2008):

o         This course taught by Dr. Pamela Campanelli focuses on the design and implementation of quantitative social surveys.

o         Topics include project management, quality, ethical and reporting issues; guidelines for understanding interviewer vs. self-completion implementation concerns; ways to minimise nonresponse before it happens; probability vs. non-probability sampling designs; calculation of the necessary sample size; introduction to sampling error, non-sampling error, and weighting procedures; and principles of data coding and processing.

2.       Methods for Missing Data: Multiple Imputation and Inverse Probability Weighting (Held in Southampton 3rd – 5th November 2008):

o         The focus of the course taught by Dr James Carpenter will be on methods to adjust for item nonresponse in sample surveys, which occurs when some survey participants choose not to answer certain questions in the survey.

o         The course will have a strong practical focus with regular computer sessions to consolidate the ideas presented in the lectures, and to gain experience with the various methods.

3.        Survey Data Analysis 1: Introducing Descriptive and Inferential Statistics (Held in Southampton 12th – 14th November 2008):

o         This course taught by Dr Gabriele Durrant aims to develop an understanding of the basic principles of statistical analysis and to enable participants to employ appropriate methods of presenting data in research reports and papers. Topics include descriptive statistics, confidence intervals, setting up and testing of hypotheses, graphs and tables and their interpretation, t-tests, analysis of variance (ANOVA), chi-square test. Practical computer workshops will be used to analyse sample survey data with the computer package SPSS.

Teaching is interactive and responsive to course participants' needs. All courses include practical sessions or computer workshops to enable participants to put the learned methods into practice.

The course fees are as follows:

£25 per day for UK-registered students.

£50 per day for staff from UK academic institutions (including research centres), ESRC funded researchers and registered charity organizations.

£195 per day for all other participants.
