We are in the prosess of annotating Souvenirs of France, in which (in the Pocket edition) on page 15 lines 10-15) Kipling refers, ironically, to a 'charming Frenchman' who had been taken prisoner when fighting on the Boer side because he 'loathed the English'.

In a later account of his adventures he referred toi Kipling by 'the one title to which I most objected'.

Can anyone shed any light on his identity.

We'll be most grateful for any advice.

All good wishes, John Radcliffe
