Web Writer/ Web Editor - Committee on Climate Change (CCC) The CCC is being established as an independent body to provide expert analysis and advice on how the UK can meet its climate change goals. The CCC is responsible for setting the UK's first three carbon budgets for 2008 to 2022 and for reporting on progress made in reducing emissions from now until 2050 and beyond. The CCC is the first body of its kind in the world and is being set up under the Climate Change Bill, which is currently making its way through Parliament. The Committee is made up of a team of scientists, economists and experts from a range of disciplines and is Chaired by Lord Adair Turner. The CCC is currently working on the production of its first report which will be published at the beginning of December to coincide with the launch of the CCC's website. The CCC's inaugural report into tackling climate change will recommend how the UK should contribute to long-term emission reduction targets, plus also how the UK through setting carbon budgets can move to a low carbon economy. The CCC is looking for a Web writer/ Editor who can produce interactive, compelling and snappy content for its new website which is due to go live in 6 weeks time on 1st December 2008. The current site is at: www.theccc.org.uk The structure of the website (wireframes) and design has been finalised and the site is currently being built. The web editor will need to work with the Communications Manager to produce a content plan for the site. The post holder will need to pull out key messages from the CCC's climate change report and use these to produce copy for the web pages. They will also be required to suggest different creative tools and interactive tools/ images which could be developed by the web agency to illustrate the content more effectively. The web writer/ editor will be paid an hourly rate to both produce a content plan, working with the Communications Manager and then to write the copy in time for launch. Skills required: * Experience of writing copy for a wide range of news and factual based websites. It would be advantageous if the applicant had experience of writing about climate change. * An understanding of web design and usability theory, plus experience of using Content Management Systems for uploading content. * Educated to Degree level with relevant qualifications and/or work experience in journalism, PR or multimedia/ online environment. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to write clearly and concisely in plain English and the ability to cut through jargon and explain complicated concepts in short sentences. * Good organisational and time-management skills - able to work to tight deadlines and juggle multiple tasks at once. * Creative thinker - ability to come up with creative solutions and contribute ideas for the content plan to the Communications Manager. * Experience of editing pictures for the web and for print using photoshop or similar software. * Enthusiastic and hard working team player. * Knowledge of the use and potential benefits of using social networking and digital media tools e.g. facebook, Youtube, podcasts and blogs. Conditions of Employment This is not a full-time/ permanent position. The web writer/ editor would be paid on an hourly / daily basis for the work produced and can work off-site or on-site if necessary.
