Most barrier creams will contain substances,
such as preservatives, that are irritant and frequently sensitisers. Occlusion
will enhance the effect due to the hyperhydration of the stratum corneum. In
fact, there are studies showing that thick creams may actually make the skin
more vulnerable to the effect of irritants.
You say she has been diagnosed as having
eczema, but do not state which form. There is a significant difference regarding
management and prognosis depending upon whether the eczema is irritant or
allergic (or a combination of both!). How was the diagnosis done? Was there a
patch test, and if so what were the results? Without this information it is
difficult to suggest what might be done.
Consider also the condition of the headsets.
Is the sponge kept clean? How is it cleaned? Could a residue of the cleaner be
left and be a contributor to the problem? Just some of the questions one needs
to ask.
