Thanks Rita,
Tell your daughter to stand tall and be proud. I too was very self
conscious at school and tried to stoop to blend in! All my family are
tall, and its now following on in my neices and nephews. My sister,
incidentally who is also tall, worked in care for many years in a
residential home for the elderly - and she's still going strong but in
social work now. Being tall has many advantages too - we look great in
clothes some people couldn't carry off and can always reach items on the
top shelf that hasn't been battered by other hands!!!! - very useful in
supermarkets i can tell you! I developed a comic sense of humour to
disguise my embarrassment at being tall and now have many friends and
clients who love me for my personality and down to earth nature, rather
than how tall i am.

Well said Angie! I am a very standard 5'6" but my husband is 6'5" and we
have a 13 year old daughter who is already 5'9" tall! As children can be
very cruel she is incredibly self-conscious about her height and tends
to stoop. I will show her your email. Thanks for being so open on Jisc!

Hello All,

This subject always strikes a bitter cord with me. I am 6ft tall and
when i started my nurse training 22 yrs ago i was almost turned down
because it was questioned whether my height would cause me problems.
This was back in the days where nurses were expected to lift patients
etc. Today, with the advent of lifting equipment, hoists etc. there
should be no more risk to tall people than 'shorter' people. Ironically,
after a long career in many hospital settings where i took particular
care with manual handling, making beds etc. because of my height, I
suffered a back injury when a car ran into the back of mine when i was
stationary! Nothing to do with my nursing work. I know this has no
answer to the question, but i ask you all to bear this in mind when
seeing tall people to assess fitness for roles.
If it had not been for a particularly supportive nurse tutor, who fought
my corner, i may have missed out on a career that i consider i have done
well in and also contributed greatly to. I am a registered nurse and
midwife, nurse prescriber and have worked in a prison and GP practice,
as well as occupational health for both the police and industry. I am
still going strong and hope to do so for years to come, so come on and
support us 'giants'!!!

Kind Regards,

[OCC-HEALTH] Pre employment health screening re tall people

Hello List

Is anyone aware of any regs or legislation regarding the employment of
particularly tall people i.e. over a specified height, when they apply
for care work? I have heard of OH declining fitness for such a role when
an individual was over a certain height because of the health issues re
manual handling, etc..
Many thanks
Annie
