Being a 5 foot 6 male I have always wished to be taller. i do remember when I sterted my training that a female nurse commented that I would be no good to lift as I was too short!!!..I believe that RAF fighter pilots have a maximum height criteria which relates to being able to fit in to the plane cockpit, but I am unaware what other occupations should have maximum height requierements.

Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Pre employment health screening re tall people

i was 6ft by the time I was 15, and that was a very long time ago. I too have suffered all sorts of insults most of my life - including being told that I was "freakishly tall" by a ward sister who decided that my uniforms were too short. However - as i walk around these days there are plenty of young girls much taller than me (including my two daughters). Topshop, Dorothy Perkins now have clothes ranges for taller girls because it is on the increase. Cant quite believe that  OH could go down the path of discriminating against someone on the ill founded basis that they "might" be at more risk of back injuries . Arenet we meant to be considering evidence based practise? Arent we all about risk management and not risk avoidance? Arent there manual handling regs?

What about firefigters/police/prsion officers? They do a lot of manual handling and believe me - some of these guys are huge

Well said Angie! I am a very standard 5’6” but my husband is 6’5” and we have a 13 year old daughter who is already 5’9” tall! As children can be very cruel she is incredibly self-conscious about her height and tends to stoop. I will show her your email. Thanks for being so open on Jisc!

Re: Pre employment health screening re tall people

Hello All,

This subject always strikes a bitter cord with me. I am 6ft tall and when i started my nurse training 22 yrs ago i was almost turned down because it was questioned whether my height would cause me problems. This was back in the days where nurses were expected to lift patients etc. Today, with the advent of lifting equipment, hoists etc. there should be no more risk to tall people than 'shorter' people. Ironically, after a long career in many hospital settings where i took particular care with manual handling, making beds etc.  because of my height, I suffered a back injury when a car ran into the back of mine when i was stationary! Nothing to do with my nursing work. I know this has no answer to the question, but i ask you all to bear this in mind when seeing tall people to assess fitness for roles.

If it had not been for a particularly supportive nurse tutor, who fought my corner, i may have missed out on a career that i consider i have done well in and also contributed greatly to. I am a registered nurse and midwife, nurse prescriber and have worked in a prison and GP practice, as well as occupational health for both the police and industry. I am still going strong and hope to do so for years to come, so come on and support us 'giants'!!!

Kind Regards,

[OCC-HEALTH] Pre employment health screening re tall people

Hello List

Is anyone aware of any regs or legislation regarding the employment of particularly tall people i.e. over a specified height, when they apply for care work? I have heard of OH declining fitness for such a role when an individual was over a certain height because of the health issues re manual handling, etc..

Many thanks

Annie
