Dear Colleagues: I would like to draw your attention to the upcoming Division of Chemical Physics Focus Session "The Transition State in Physics, Chemistry, and Astrophysics " to be held at the March meeting of the American Physical Society, March 16 - 20, 2009, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. You are cordially invited to attend, present a contributed talk and register for this DCP Focus Session. This Focus Session will highlight the recent developments in the study of the foundations and applications of transition state theory. This session will bring together a wide variety of Chemists, Physicists and Mathematicians. The program for this Focus Session will include discussions of the mathematical foundations of both classical and quantum transition state theory and applications in the fields of chemistry, atomic and molecular physics and celestial mechanics . The following speakers have accepted the invitation to present: Turgay Uzer, Georgia Tech - "Transition State Theory: The Phase Space Perspective" R. Stephen Berry, Univ. of Chicago - "Exploring Topographies and Dynamics on Many-Dimensional Landscapes" George Haller, MIT - "Generalized Transition State Geometry near High-Rank Saddles" Holger Waalkens, University of Groningen - "Quantum transition state theory" Tamiki Komatsuzaki, Hokkaido University - "Exploring the Origin of "Chance and Necessity" Buried in Chemical Reactions" Thomas Bartsch, Loughborough University - "Transition States in a Noisy Environment" Tomohiro Yanao, Cal Tech - "Intramolecular energy transfer, driving mechanisms, and reaction rates for collective motions of clusters" In order to present a contributed talk, please submit your abstract electronically. The following URL will take you to the appropriate site for abstract submission: http://www.aps.org/meetings/march/index.cfm. THE DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACT SUBMISSION IS NOVEMBER 21, 2008. I hope that you can join us at this exciting meeting in Pittsburgh. Sincerely, Charles Jaffé Professor of Chemistry C.
