Chris, We have three outstanding 'reapply via Ethos' responses from original requests submitted in April & May 2008, chased in September. In defence of BL I would say that the three institutions had refused to supply their paper copies to BL for microfilming ahead of the Ethos launch. This leaves us in the awkward position of having to advise our readers to go and visit the institutions in person in order to consult the paper copy. A backward step indeed! Here at Swansea we will continue to supply paper copies for restricted consultation at your institution. We will also continue to consult the chart produced by Dr Jenny Brine for FIL Newsletter 41 (2003) to ascertain if institutions are prepared to lend a paper copy. We hope that it is still reasonably accurate; perhaps it is time for an update? I phoned customer services to ask how about it, given the delay in EThOS, only to be told there was no way and we would just have to wait. I was not best pleased! These requests are required quite quickly so we are having to put our hopes in the awarding institutions being prepared to lend their paper copies. Is this the experience generally ? Perhaps the British Thesis service could explain why they can't continue to supply us with microfilms as least in the interim until EThOS is up and running.
