"Born in Belgrade in 1953, Boris A. Novak is an
award-winning Slovene poet, playwright, translator, essayist and Professor of
Comparative Literature and Philosophy at Lubljana University. The author of
some 30 volumes, Professor Novak is one of the most distinguished Slovene poets
and a representative of the new formalist school. Translated in many languages,
his poetry has been awarded some of the highest literary prizes, to include the
prestigious Prešeren Fund Award in 1984 and the International Award Bosanski
Stećak of the Association of Writers of Bosnia and Hercegovina in 2000.
Novak is particularly renowned for the major part he played in promoting
democracy and freedom of expression, actively helping refugees from the former
Yugoslavia and writers from Sarajevo, a contribution that was described as one
of the most substantial and sustained efforts in the history of the Writers for
Peace Committee of PEN International. He has subsequently acted as Vice
President of this distinguished humanitarian literary society since 2002.
Professor Novak continues to be actively committed to protecting the human
rights of minority groups in Slovenia, as well as those of the endangered
species of Lipizzan horses. Today's reading and lecture will focus on 'Two
moments in life when poetry is necessary'."
