Time: 5.30-7.30 pm
Place: Room 1.24, Hillary Place Building, School of Education, University of Leeds
*****
The experiences of new A8 migrant communities living in Leeds; exploring migration, work and community
Joe Cook, University of Leeds
Peter Dwyer, Nottingham Trent University
*****
This presentation is based upon a recently completed research project funded by Leeds City Council, examining the migration and settlement experiences of new A8 migrants living in the city of Leeds. The project worked with new migrant workers from Poland and Slovakia, including Roma families. The presentation outlines experiences of migration, work, service use and community/neighbourhood gathered through conducting interviews and focus groups with new migrant communities, employers, service providers and established communities.
In this presentation we will highlight some of the hierarchies and inequalities present within the new migrant workforce, particularly in terms of nationality, ethnicity and gender and the way these interact with inequalities around language and the recognition of skills and qualifications. Neighbourhood and community relations are discussed in terms of the perceived impacts upon established communities and the encounters/interactions between new migrants and established communities. Finally we will outline participants' experiences of accessing welfare services and the assumptions around the strain this new wave of migration places upon local services.
The project report is available at http://www.lssi.leeds.ac.uk/projects/11

The ESOL Research Group is open to anyone with an interest in research into ESOL in the Skills for Life context in the UK, and who is within striking distance of the University of Leeds. This includes - but is not limited to - current students, ESOL researchers, practitioners currently carrying out research, practitioners who are planning to carry out research, and those who have been involved in previous ESOL research.
How to get to the university: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/visitors/getting_here.htm
How to get to Hillary Place: Hillary Place is close to the Parkinson Building (with the white clock tower). As you face the Parkinson steps, it is down the hill to your left, and on the left, opposite the old church. Hillary Place is a row of red-brick terraced houses.
