You may be interested in an article in the October 2008 Harvard Business Review.  Entitled ‘The contribution revolution – letting volunteers build your business’ and written by Scott Cook, it contains very useful advice on engaging users in on-line activity with organisations and the impact that can have on ‘brand’ loyalty, product/service development and understanding user needs.  Whilst written for the commercial world it has a lot of relevance to our services.
