Vacancy: Web Archiving Assistant at the National Archives, Kew, UK

Web Archiving Assistant
Starting salary £19,025 excellent benefits
Fixed term contract until 31st April 2009

The National Archives is a government department; and also an executive agency of the Ministry of Justice. The National Archives is also the UK government’s official archive, containing 900 years of history from Domesday Book to the present, with records ranging from parchment and paper scrolls through to recently created digital files and archived websites.

The National Archives is developing a comprehensive web archiving programme to ensure continued access to government information. A Web Archiving assistant is needed to support the team.

You will play an integral role in our digital preservation services team. You will be responsible for performing website quality assurance on our existing website archive, which is growing rapidly. This will include reviewing and assessing issues raised on a web-based tracking system. You will also prepare archived material for online publication, including some cataloguing of websites.

You will also support the web continuity project manager by providing support to the project, including arranging meetings and briefings, co-ordinating activities, taking minutes and writing up workshops, and managing incoming email. This is an ideal opportunity to join a rapidly developing discipline in digital preservation.

This is an important support role, calling for someone with a good standard of education and a highly organised approach. You will have both an interest in how websites are created and a genuine interest in archive work. If you’ve got a background in these areas, this would be a significant advantage.

To apply, please visit our website quoting reference 1298.
