Dear Mr Shriharan,

Many thanks for your e-mail but I feel there has been a misunderstanding, I
was not sure if as an employer, we could ask for a list of all user I.D's
and passwords which would be held completely confidential for the purpose of
an employee leaving, on sick leave or other where the business would suffer
for non-respondent of e-mails, correspondence etc.

It would not be to share this information with others as this would be
detrimental to the employees and the employer.

Sorry if I was not clear with my query.

Kind regards
Anjana

Dear Anjana,
As others suggested sharing usernames and passwords is not at all a good
practice.
Most of the organizations strictly prohibit this by clearly specifying in
their IT/other policies.
There is another option.
With your Managements consent, generally you can request your email service
provider/ISP to copy all incoming and outgoing emails of lower level
employees to their respective superiors (provided that they support this
service - MS Exchange Server supports this).
By doing this the superiors will always be able to monitor/know the latest
goings, and do not have to share ids and passwords.

Dear all,

Firstly can I thank you for your impressive responses which has put my mind
at rest and also made me realise that I need to put a number of
processes/procedures in place.

We are a very small organisation and do not have an IT/Technical division
therefore rely on contracting technical support as and when we need this.
However you have been a fantastic help, now all I need to do is get the
documentation.

Wish me luck!!!!!

Kind regards
Anjana

Dear all,

Can someone please advise me if it is illegal to ask staff members for
passwords and user ID's for a business.

I am just wondering what would happen if a staff member should leave
suddenly - if we do not have details it would affect the business (accessing
e-mails IT systems etc.)

Hope this makes sense.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards
Anjana

DETAILS: In keeping with the last year's successful event the MetaKnowledge
Mash-up 2007,
BCS KIDMM (http://www.kidmm.org) and ISKO UK (http://www.kidmm.org) have
joined
efforts to organise a follow-up event.

Knowledge management professionals know that much of the knowledge which
drives
a successful organisation derives from its communities, both formal and
informal; and that knowledge can be used and shared more easily if it is
organised.

In many organisational contexts, be they businesses, government departments,

professional associations or social enterprises, a lot of the most useful
knowledge is not contained in documents and other written forms; it is in
peoples' heads. Before knowledge organisation can begin, there is already
the
challenge of eliciting and formulating what people know. What are the
methods
and tools that can help in these processes?

If knowledge organisation (KO) is at work the instant we open our mouths or
tap
on a keyboard, how and to what degree should we formalise it in our
communities,
whether face-to-face or virtual? Perhaps different techniques apply in each
circumstance?

These are some of the questions surrounding KM and KO in the Web 2.0 age
that we
hope will be raised and discussed on October 9th. The speakers have been
selected because they have case-study stories to tell, and there will also
be
participative round-table exercises. If we can also find some answers, that
will
be a bonus!

Speakers and contributors include: Alan Pollard, Conrad Taylor, Marilyn
Leask,
Jan Wyllie, Lyndsay Rees-Jones, Ed Mitchell, Christopher Dean, Sabine K
McNeill
and Susan Payne.
