Hello Esther

I am responding to your query as the course director for the London South
Bank University degree programme. I can only comment on our programme, not
what happens elsewhere.

The NMC require courses which they validate to enforce very strict rules re
practice. We offer suitable applicants places conditional on them having an
appropriate practice placement. This must be in place throughout the whole
programme and for 10 weeks of consolidated practice at the end of the taught
component of the programme. Their placement and practice teacher must be
confirmed by the third week of the course AND they must ensure they have
made up any days of practice experience they may have missed (this would be
3 days for a part-time student).

Unfortunately, every year we have students, usually lone practitioners, who
"lose" their practice teacher or placement after they have commenced their
studies. This is usually as a result of job moves, maternity leave etc. In
addition, a small number of applicants have arranged placements which then
³fall through² at the last minute. Usually such applicants have resigned
from their posts in order to take up a place on our programme. Without some
degree of flexibility on our part they would be left without a job nor a
place on the programme. Programmes must comply with the NMC practice
requirements. Students who commence study with us are aware that under these
circumstances, although very harsh, those who do not have a placement by
week 3 are withdrawn from the BSc programme until they have confirmed
suitable arrangements. Hence the reason why students who are desperate for a
placement post on this web-site and any assistance by practitioners to
facilitate a placement is greatly appreciated by all concerned.

Hope this helps to clarify.

Anne
