He was a co-author of the MGS 'Geol of Carb. Lst. ..... of North Derbyshire & the Adjoining Parts of Yorkshire'. He contributed to Topley's Memoir on the Geology of the Weald; with Topley he is credited with making a significant contribution to the understanding of the geomorphological development of the Weald. However, he's probably best known for his many years of service as a Government Mines Inspector, Cornwall & north Wales (1872-1901) and professor of mining in the Royal School of Mines, London.
