I am re-joining the list after a hiatus. My Ph.D. is in medieval and Renaissance history; I have worked extensively on the cult of St. Joseph and teach in the Philadelphia area. My current interest relates to medieval ideas regarding the natural world. I'm gathering examples, from texts of all kinds, of appreciation, tenderness, or care for the natural world (plants, animals, Creation generally) and would appreciate any pointers to writers or texts. Recently I noticed John Ruusbroec's recommendations of the work of bees and ants as a model for human spirituality (in his Spiritual Espousals), and I'm wondering whether anyone has thoughts on any past history of this concept or on other writers who expressed it. Finally, if anyone wishes to recommend secondary works on medieval perspectives on nature and ecology, I'll be happy to know of them.
