Holidays over - did you remember to book? ALPSP Seminar Success in East and Central Europe Friday 3 October 2008 (0930 - 1615) Venue: British Institute of Radiology, 36 Portland Place, London, W1B 1AT Chair: Chris Bennett, Oxford University Press What are the opportunities and challenges facing smaller publishers and societies in the complex markets of East and Central Europe? What are the available options for selling and marketing your publications to these markets? What can be learned from the experiences of other publishers? The practicalities of dealing with unfamiliar markets can be daunting for smaller publishers and learned societies with limited resources - and thus a real challenge. For those who take the initiative, however, the benefits of working in such a diverse and demanding region as East and Central Europe are proportionately great. During this meeting, representatives from smaller and larger publishers will offer an insight into how to increase your global reach in the region, including how to source agents and local reps if appropriate, and how to market your products. The seminar will include a business update on emerging trends in some of the key East and Central European countries and an overview of the competitive landscape and main players. Furthermore, the event will demonstrate in a practical way how to establish a presence in the region with limited resources. Who should attend? This meeting will be of particular interest to management in small and medium sized publishers, as well as their specialist sales and marketing staff. It will also appeal to those responsible for the editorial content of journals and books. In addition, speakers will address the process of implementing such policies, including how to decide if adopting a specific policy is right for your journal, how to do it, what the implications are, and how to communicate your policies to your authors and readers. This workshop will not be covering publication misconduct as these are addressed by COPE.
