The Cranston Library was founded on 14 March 1701 by the Revd Andrew
Cranston. It was probably the first public lending library in England and
contains works of literature, history, geography, mathematics, classics
and theology. There are over two thousand books in the library, mainly
dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. There are also a number of
earlier printed volumes and a few manuscripts. (Registered Charity No.
