CONFERENCE

The Italian perspective on metahistorical fiction:

The 'New Italian Epic'

Organiser, Claudia Boscolo, Royal Holloway University of London

2nd October 2008

A thorny debate is taking place in Italian media, triggered by an essay
published online by Wu Ming 1 (alias Roberto Bui, founding member of the
Luther Blissett Project and currently one of the Wu Ming writing
collective). The essay is entitled: New Italian Epic. Memorandum
1993-2008: narrativa, sguardo obliquo, ritorno al futuro. It is a
reflection on current cultural circumstances in Italy and attempts a
classification of several recent novels, such as Wu Ming's Manituana,
Roberto Saviano's Gomorra, Giuseppe Genna's Hitler, Carlo Lucarelli's
L'ottava vibrazione, under the common aegis of a renewed interest in
epic in Italian literature.

The aim of this round-table is to explain the New Italian Epic movement
to the English speaking public, to introduce the question of
intergeneric transmediality, which is an essential component of New
Italian Epic, and to offer the opportunity for an interdisciplinary
debate on this question.
