Museums for the People: Collections and Displays in London

This module looks at the history of London’s museum and collecting cultures,
using the developments in South Kensington and the Victoria and Albert
Museum in particular as a case study. Beginning with the aftermath of the
Great Exhibition, the history of displaying art objects to the public is
considered until the present day. Drawing on a range of sources, from
parliamentary reports to newspaper articles, and the expertise of guest
speakers, this module engages with the controversies and the results of the
emergence of London as a ‘Museum Metropolis’.
