Alain, I believe that this, in essence is the fundamental problem. Freud wanted to be therapeutic, and talked of his original concepts (ie Oedipus) as metaphors to be used in lieu of science because our knowledge was insufficient. Freud likewise described psychoanalysis as "the talking cure"...
