I think other than the ashkenazi and huguenots european emigration and settlement tend to be overlooked in the British Isles. There is probably quite a lot of local council and central governmnet documents (and e-documents) written in polish that may surprise some people in fifty years time from now.
Incidently I saw an advertisment for an italian speaking social worker for a london borough last year. So its clearly still an important language in some places in Britain.

Dear All

I live in Broxbourne, which has for many years had a large Italian population.  They used to work in the glasshouses and plant nurseries, which covered the Lea Valley for decades but have now fallen victim to unfair competition from Holland.  The council web site has an Italian option.

Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire had a tile works owned by Marley.  The skilled workers were brought in from Italy.  It was odd to arrive in this rural town in the 60’s and hear mostly Italian being spoken as you walked up the High Street.

It could be seen as an extension of the requirement to provide literature in a selection of languages, but I agree that the cost of providing this would need to be looked at carefully.

Hope this is of use.

Welsh, that I can see.  But French and Spanish?  When did we start to speak those in the UK?  Top line of http://www.ico.gov.uk/

Any ideas?
