Hello all,
Perhaps a slightly embarrassing question to ask (seeing as
though I work as an enforcing officer), but here goes anyway:
Does everyone accept commercial/industrial scenario assessment
criteria (SGVs or whatever) as acceptable levels for soils used for soft
landscaping within a commercial/industrial site?
I know that that’s why they have been developed in the
first place, but the levels seem to be considerably higher and on the face of
it, it seems wrong for people to be working in an area where soils have up to 1400mg/kg
of cadmium or 30mg/kg of benzo(a)pyrene etc (and possibly even higher in some
areas, as long as the US95 came out under the assessment value).
Realistically, I suppose the majority of people would only
come into very limited contact with these soils (if at all), but applying a ‘worst
case scenario’, don’t people sometimes sit out on the grass having
their lunch in the summer months? (if we ever had a decent summer that is of
course – perhaps these values are much lower in spain??!!).
I’m not sure I’d feel that comfortable eating my lunch sat out on the
grass in amongst 30mg/kg of benzo(a)pyrene, even if it was only once in a blue
moon. Perhaps I’m being over concerned?
I would be interested to know whether people generally just
accept generic guidelines for a commercial/industrial setting as read, or
whether they judge things on a case by case basis or whether I’ve got the
wrong end of the stick entirely?
Thanks in advance
Karl
