Yes, we are in 7.2 as well Sandra - thanks for that information, we'll follow up with BB Support (allegedly thus named).

John,

Which version of Blackboard are you running?

We have had exactly the problem you describe, to the point where we advised all tutors not to up load documents via the visual text box there is a fix, for us it was an IE only issue it did not affect firefox users our case Ticket was 499745, it might give your TSM a direction to go in, ours at the time said it was a known issue in 7.2. We moved to version 8 in June and have not had the problem since.

Thanks Kate - we did try deleting the session ID but that didn't work. However, the lecturer has been experiencing what you describe, that the images go away and come back, or more to the point are there then go away for no apparent reason. Are we approaching the status of a bug - gosh, that would be a first.

Hi John, I've seen this recently too, but I can't fix it :(
It used to be that if you looked at the html code, it would have included a session ID in the embedded location, and if you deleted the session ID it worked fine. This was a common issue on files embedded via the text editor a couple of releases ago. We saw this a couple of weeks ago and deleting the session ID didn't make any difference, I had to re upload all the images (and I have a recurring worry that images/files selected and deleted or lost this way might still be orphaned in the system somewhere). Last week it happened to me again, but for some reason the images came back on their own accord even when I was in a different session. You could always try getting rid of the session ID and seeing if that makes a difference...

That's what we've been doing Leo, but there's where we're getting the problem arising.

Sorry if I've missed the point - I normally use attach image and upload the image into the content area itself - is there a good reason not to do it this way?

Cheers

Right - but does that mean that the link will always be wrong for other users - that surely makes the Attach Image tool in the Editor impossible to use ?

:-)

that's probably exactly what's causing the problem. The URL contains the session ID of the user that created that link. When another user (with another sessionID) clicks the link the image will not be displayed because the session ID of that user is different from the one in the link.

My assumption is that when you create such a link it will work as long as YOU don't log out. When you log out and log in again the link will probably not work anymore for you.

We tried logging in and out a couple of times Henk and still got the same code in the URL - so it was staying constant after logging in and out.

haven't you included the session ID (that code starting with @@) in the URL? If that's the case the link will only work as long as the session is active. I assume that when you log out (eventually close your browser) and then log in again the just working link will not work anymore, because you have gotten another session ID

We've also now found out that when we cut and paste the correct first part of the URL into the incorrect address the image then appears. But why is Blackboard creating an incorrect file path sometimes, but not all times ?

It's normally easiest put the images in the Content System then link to them from your courses using the insert picture option from the Visual Text Box Editor. This way the permissions are automatically updated based on the course enrollment.

Kind regards,

Tim

So basically make sure the images are available - there aren't any other options I presume. I'll check that - thanks Tim.

        Hi John,

If you are pasting links from the content system then just double check that file permissions are set to allow the correct amount of users to view the files. The default will normally only allow the author permission to view the file.

If you take the URLs from images or any content held in content areas that are set to unavailable then the content will be unavailable to all students but not instructors, even if the links have been copied into 'available' areas.

        Hope that helps,

        Tim

Thanks for that Sarah - I think we eliminated that because we are uploading images to BB and then deriving the links - but I'll double check that.

I'm not quite sure but it may be that you are linking to somewhere local? I know that when we upgraded to blackboard 7, one of the lecturers materials were not showing images, and from further investigation that was because they were linking to her network drive within the college, so therefore the only place they were visible were on her computer within the college. Any images need to be uploaded to the server and then linked to where they are stored on the server.

Can anyone shed light on the use of images in content and tool areas of Blackboard. We have the situation where an image pasted into a content area - say to accompany a folder icon - is visible to the user who created the content but not to others. Although this is not consistently the case, and is sometimes visible to others. The same is true where we paste images into HTML - such as in the Announcements. To do this we put the image into the course in a hidden folder and copy its URL, but again it is not universally visible.
