The earliest known photograph of Archer that I know
of is 1913 when he became Mayor of Battersea (i.e. before the period Marcia
Michael wants. Only some photos of Battersea and Battersea Trades & Labour
Council members taken by Archer have survived in TLC reports. For more
details on him see the British Library Black Europeans website.
In terms of earlier photos there is James Durham of
the Durham Light Infantry and of course Arthur Wharton, the footballer.
Has anyone tried to examine in enlarged and close
detail the 'photo' of the Chartist demo on Kennington Common in 1848 to see if
William Cuffay can be made out?
Is there a photo of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor
pre1900? We have no idea whether Archer photographed his black friends and
acquaintainces, but that again would be post 1900 as well.
