Jacob Larwood and John Camden Hotten (English
Inn Signs, Exeter, 1985, p 252)) suggest that the Black Boy
tobacconist sign may have been adopted for an inn where tobacco could
also be purchased, and quotes Ben Jonson's play Bartholomew
Fair, "I thought he would have run mad o' the Black Boy in Bucklersbury,
that takes the scurvy roguy tobacco there"
Might this help?
