Education Officer (History Centre)

Location: Hull City Archives, 79 Lowgate

This is a project funded fixed term contract for 4 years. If you are a permanent employee of Hull City Council your current job will be kept open for you in case you need to return.

The History Centre is a joint project between Hull City Council and the University of Hull. £7.7m has been awarded to the partnership by the Heritage Lottery Fund. A state-of-the-art home for the City’s written heritage is scheduled for completion in autumn 2009, and will transform the way we give access to Hull’s historical archives and local studies resources.

As Education Officer you will work in parthership with Hull Museums Education & Lifelong Learning Service to develop and deliver a series of new innovative learning programmes to communicate effectively the archive and local studies holdings of the Hull History Centre to wider audiences. Focussing on schools, you will develop sustainable curriculum resources, e-learning materials and INSET/CPD activities to support the delivery of these new programmes.

You will be educated to degree level and will have a teaching qualification, a museums education qualification and/or extensive experience in archives/museum/heritage education field. You will have good knowledge of developing learning programmes linked to archives, museums and/or library material, and experience of delivering them. You will have a proven record of delivering high quality, innovative learning experiences to a variety of different audiences.  You will have excellent communication skills with the ability to deliver all audiences, a creative and innovative approach to problem solving, and be able to prepare e-learning materials and input onto websites.

This post provides an opportunity to be involved with a ground breaking, prestigious project which will see the construction of a landmark building and the development of an exciting service based in it.

The successful candidate's appointment will be subject to the Council obtaining a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau.

As Audience Development Officer you will work in partnership with Hull Museums Education and Lifelong Learning Service to develop, manage and deliver an access and outreach policy for the History Centre. You will plan and deliver initiatives to bring new, more diverse audiences to the History Centre. You will work closely with the voluntary sector to develop a volunteer base for the History Centre. You will work with the History Centre team to plan and deliver adult learning opportunities based around the unique material held by the History Centre.

You should be educated to degree level and have considerable experience in delivering developing and delivering outreach and learning projects within a museums/archives/library or other heritage context. You should have a good understanding of frameworks for identifying the outcomes and assessing the impact of learning initiatives, and an excellent understanding of the audience development opportunities within the archives, library and museum sectors including community archive projects. You should be able to exercise initiative and have good communication and interpersonal skills.
