the Australasian Pollen and Spore Atlas available next year at the
Department of Archaeology and Natural History, ANU. Details can also

THREE INTERNSHIPS IN THE AUSTRALASIAN POLLEN AND SPORE ATLAS

The Australasian Pollen and Spore Atlas (APSA) is a database under
development in the Department of Archaeology and Natural History,
RSPAS, Australian National University, and aims to provide web access
to the pollen and spore collection held in the department (see
http://apsa.anu.edu.au). The project is funded through the ARC
e-Research Special Initiative Scheme (2006) and the ARC LIEF scheme
(2008-9). Through support from the ARC Environmental Futures Network
we are able to provide the opportunity for students and researchers
using pollen and spore reference material valuable to their own
research programs to:

1.      be based at a laboratory with state-of-the-art digital
microscopy equipment and an extensive pollen and spore reference collection,
2.      interact with staff in the department and develop a working
understanding of the Atlas database,
3.      select pollen and spore reference material held in the
department from their own geographic region of interest and compile
and enter data and digital images of these into the Atlas.

The interns will be able to use data and images they add to the Atlas
(and those that already exist in the Atlas) for their own research projects.

Each internship is for up to 4 weeks anytime between 15th January and
31st May 2009.

Applicants must provide a 1/2 page (<300 words) outline of why they
want to be involved in the internship program, where their
geographical region of interest is, how this will contribute to their
ongoing research, and when you would like to take up the internship .
A 1 page CV should also be attached (with 2 named referees).
Application must be emailed to the contacts below no later than 1st
November 2008 and a decision will be made by mid November 2008.

Eligibility
Applicants can be from any country, must be working on pollen records
or reference material from a region within SE Asia, Papua New Guinea,
Australia or islands within the Pacific Ocean. You must hold an
honours degree (or equivalent) in pollen-related research.

The Internships provide travel costs up to $1000 (within Australia)
or $1800 (outside Australia), and accommodation up to $500/week.
