Postgraduate Opportunity for Doctoral Research Studentship
Cremation in Scotland Project
Leverhulme Trust Funded at the University of Durham
Applications are sought for a three year doctoral studentship on the Theme of
Cremation in Scotland funded by
The Leverhulme Trust. This presents an unusual opportunity for a suitable
candidate to hold a fully funded three-year studentship as part of a strong
interdisciplinary team of established scholars in the anthropology-sociology of
religion, archaeology, law and theology, within a department possessing a
strong research culture.
The successful candidate’s supervisory team will include Prof.
Douglas Davies who is both an anthropologist and theologian, and Dr Alec Ryrie,
a historian of the Scottish Reformation, both of Durham University’s
Department of Theology and Religion. He or she will pursue focused
research on a topic or topics relating to death, dying and afterlife in
Scottish church history, working across the period from the Reformation to the
present.
The Cremation in Scotland Project is led by Professors Douglas Davies of Durham and
Hilary Grainger of London who
is an architectural historian, along with Dr Peter Jupp who has written the
standard history of English cremation and Mr Stephen White who is an expert on
Law relation to death and funerals. As well as working towards an integrated
account of cremation in Scotland this
venture will also analyze the interdisciplinary process operating within the
project itself.
Requirements
The successful candidate, who will hold a good degree
in Theology, Religious Studies, History or another relevant discipline
and may also possess an appropriate M.A. level qualification, would become
resident in Durham but be prepared to engage in appropriate archive or other
work within Scotland, and be prepared to work as part of the interdisciplinary
team.

their behalf.
