Astronomical software support position at ASTRON (the Netherlands)

The selected candidate is expected to maintain the software environment
for astronomers at ASTRON, and ensure that the most recent astronomical
(and related) applications are available to staff and visitors. He/she 
will be the interface between the astronomy and support groups of ASTRON,
JIVE and the ASTRON ICT division. He/she is expected to be familiar with
radio astronomical software and Linux operating systems. He/she is also
expected to be able to contribute to the development and implementation of
new reduction algorithms in existing packages.

The selected candidate should have an astronomical background (at least a
Masters degree in Astronomy, but ideally a PhD) and have some experience
in working in a scientific environment. The candidate is expected to
continue or further develop his/her astronomical research (up to 30%)
inside the Astronomy Group.

The astronomy group is heavily involved in the commissioning of LOFAR, and
the Radio Observatory will exploit this facility and provide science
support to the full user community. This next generation, low-frequency
radio telescope will provide unique data in this relatively unexplored
spectral window starting in 2009.The Radio Observatory also operates the
Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT).

ASTRON hosts the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe (JIVE). ASTRON and
JIVE staff are engaged in many frontline research areas.

The appointment is initially for two years and may be renewed for up to
three years.
