For void as a mystical theme you might also look at Marguerite Porete on annihilation. Among other works:

Robinson, Joanne Maguire. Nobility and Annihilation in Marguerite Porete's Mirror of Simple Souls. SUNY Series in Western Esoteric Traditions. Albany, NY: State University of New York Press, c2001.

Sells, Michael. Mystical Languages of Unsaying. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1994.

Turner, Denys. The Darkness of God: Negativity in Christian Mysticism. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1995

Daniel Gullo has already given the excellent advice to look at Bernard McGinn's The Presence of God: A History of Western Christian Mysticism. <4> vols. New York: Crossroad, 1991-   ; his recent work on Eckhart would also be worth a look. I'd also check the Dictionnaire de Spiritualité, perhaps under "Abnégation" and "Vide", but there may be other relevant headwords too. -- Paul Chandler

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear colleagues,

I am looking for western medieval sources that discuss the concepts of void and emptiness. I remember that Eckhart, somewhere, discussed nothingness; and maybe Tauler; and I might be wrong, but I remember something from The Cloud of Unknowing. But where? In what context? Where else might I hunt? Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,
