New Impact Factors show growing reputation of BioMed Central journals

The latest Impact Factors for BioMed Central's Open access publisher confirm the excellent performance and growing prestige of its journals. A total of 42 BioMed Central journals now have Impact Factors listed in the latest edition of the Journal Citation Report from Thomson Reuters.

Impact Factors measure the average number of citations received by articles in a journal, and are widely used as in research evaluation as an indicator of journal quality.

A total of 13 BioMed Central journals received their first Impact Factors in 2008:

Molecular Pain  4.13
Retrovirology   4.04
Molecular Cancer        3.69
Microbial Cell Factories        3.36
Biology Direct  3.29
Plant Biology   3.23
Journal of Translational Medicine       2.94
BMC Medical Genetics    2.42
Reproductive Biology & Endocrinology            2.37
BMC Neurology   1.90
Algorithms for Molecular Biology        1.63 
Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases       1.30


Further highlights

* BMC Biology ranks 6th of 70 journals in the Biology category, confirming its status as the flagship biology journal in the BMC series

* * BMC Plant Biology's Impact Factor of 3.23 places it 18th of 152 journals in the Plant Science category
* Retrovirology ranks 5th of the 25 journals in the Virology category
* Malaria Journal retains its status as the top-ranked journal in the field of Tropical Medicine
* Genome Biology's ranking improved from 15th to 13th of the 132 titles in the Genetics & Heredity category.
* Molecular Pain's Impact Factor of 4.13 makes it one of the most highest ranked titles in its field


Overall, the median Impact Factor for a BioMed Central journals increased from 2.77 to 2.91, confirming the quality  of BioMed Central's journal portfolio.
