Iīm afraid I havenīt read that publication, so I donīt know when exactly the early cinema is supposed to end. In Bunuels "Last Sigh" he very briefly mentions a "narrator", someone of flesh and blood, whoīs telling the audience what is happening inbetween the scenes (because montage was something that wasnīt familiar yet), e.g. "Itīs still the same people, but now they have left the building".

My naive guess would be such a presence would justify a distinction between active and passive participation. Iīd love to know whether such a figure is discussed in the book, because I have to confess I know zero about it.
