Hi Laura I am not clear what you mean by 'he would owe about £50,000'. Are you asking the student to pay this back? At Manchester we would use ALF after DSA exceeds and the University would also contribute. We don't ask students to contribute. Did you know that in such circumstances more than £3000 of ALF can be used? This might help. Also, NMH allowances rise substantially from September. This has some pitfalls depending on what the needs are and how we pay for them (i.e support workers) but it means that the student is fully supported. An idea for their next year might be to look into the Snowdon Award scheme?
