We do have over 2 years experience in using this test and are currently evaluating the operational use of this in over 200 patients. We do this test on a Azeda Tli analyser based in the laboratory. Preliminary data analysis shows that it has a high negative predictive value around 99% in those presenting with preterm labour. This is in keeping with previous studies. Although this is an expensive test, preliminary evaluations suggest there is a significant cost saving by way of decreased length of average hospital stay, use of steroids, tocolysis and U/SS since the test has been introduced. The obstetricians and midwives find this test very useful in making a decision to discharge patients with a negative test and who otherwise have low clinical risk of premature preterm birth. Midwives and obstetricians also find a negative useful in  reassuring the patients and their families.

One of our regional hospitals (Greymouth hospital - on the other side of the Southern Alps) also use this test  and find it very useful, as it avoids helicopter transfer of patients with a negative test to a tertiary hospital and thus probably considerable cost savings.
