Hague Justice Portal
The Hague Justice Portal is maintained by the Hague Academic Coalition (an academic consortium including Carnegie Foundation; Institute of Social Studies T.M.C. Asser Institute, Institute Clingendael ).It provides free access to a portal of news stories, fact sheets, and research papers relating to the work of the Hague institutions, courts and tribunals including the International Criminal Court; International Court of Justice, International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia; Iran-United States Claims Tribunal; Permanent Court of Arbitration; Special Court for Sierra Leone. Also accessible are articles from the Hague Justice Journal; postings from the International Justice Forum email discussion forum and links to academic research projects in the field of international criminal justice. The site is offered in English, French or Dutch.

The SnagFilms website was launched in 2008. It aims to provide free access to full length documentary films from a range of sources including independent film makers. Topics covered included American politics, international affairs, the environment, arts and social policy. They include contributions from PBS, National Geographic. It is possible to search or browse the website, also to 'snag' a film to share with others and embedded on a website. Some descriptions of content, technical and copyright information are displayed on the website.

Future of red, blue and purple America
The Future of Red, Blue and Purple America is a joint project from The Brookings Institution and American Enterprise Institute which was created to examine the impact of 7 trends (decline of the white working class; changing family structure; aging society, rise of immigration from Latin America and Asia; changing face of the suburbs, changes in religious affiliation) on the 2008 American Presidential election and the future of American politics.The website provides details of the aims, methods and findings of the project. It includes free acess to online papers, book chapters and webcasts from events. Technical and copyright details are displayed on the website.

Scottish Screen Archive
The Scottish Screen Archive is based at the National Library of Scotland. It houses over 32,000 examples of video and film covering Scottish cultural, social and political history. Its website provides information about its collections, including access to its searchable catalogue of holdings. An increasing number of film clips and be viewed free of charge via the website. Key topics covered by these include Scotland during the First and Second World Wars; Scottish industry, the homelife and culture of typical Scots during the 20th Century; political events and rallies; housing developments and schemes. Each catalogue entry provides details on the film content and running time. It is possible to restrict catalogue searches to online content only. Copyright and technical detail is provided on the website.

Les Signets de la Bibliothèque nationale de France is a gateway to recommended academic Internet resources selected by the staff of the Bibliothèque nationale (National Library of France). All subject areas of the sciences, social sciences and humanities are covered. This section links to materials on the social sciences. It is sub-divided into more specific subject areas which include economics, politics, sociology, womens studies, anthropology, demography and education. Resources indexed include library catalogues, professional associations, blogs, research bodies and full text repositories. There is excellent coverage of French language resources, although many English language sites are also included. Individual records include descriptions of subject content and details about key features such as online journals. Descriptions are written in French only.

Behind the wire: 1914-1918 British prisoners of war database
This database was compiled by a group of volunteers from the Great War Forum under the management of Michael Mills using data taken from work conducted by the Committee on the Treatment of British Prisoners of War, during and shortly after the First World War 1914-1918. It contains a searchable online index to records held in the National Archives in Kew enabling users, such as family historians, to quickly locate records by name, regiment and prisoner of war camp. Note the full text records are not online.

Golden bridge: child migration from Scotland to Canada 1869-1939
This site provides free access to an online exhibition created by the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services . It provides free access to a background history of the policy, plus 100s of photographs and some oral history accounts from child migrants. The latter include video testimonies and sound recordings which provide insight into the personal experiences of the children. A timeline of events and bibliography of further readings is provided. Technical and copyright information is displayed on the website.

UK operations in Iraq and the Gulf
This site provides free access to the full text of House of Commons Defence select Committee which was published as HC 982 session 2007-8 in July 2008. The 24 page report critically reviews UK involvement in military operations in 2007/8. Topics covered include the security situation in Iraq, the insurgency, the economic development in Southern Iraq and the state of development of the Iraqi security forces.

Evangelists of Empire? missionaries in colonial history
This site provides free access to the full text of History conference and seminar series 18 which was published by Published by the eScholarship Research Centre in collaboration with the School of Historical Studies, The University of Melbourne, July 2008. The 245 page title contains 19 essays on the history of colonialism which focus upon the relationship between Christian missionaries and Empire, colonisation and colonised peoples. Topics covered include colonialism and the politics of gender, colonialism and relationship with aborigines in Australia.

Not new but recommended.
Scotland's people
This site is the official government source of geneaological data for Scotland. It is maintained by a partnership between General Register Office for Scotland, the National Archives of Scotland and the Court of the Lord Lyon. It offers searchable databases of information about wills, birth certificates, marriages and deaths and censuses in Scotland. These constitute a rich source of information for family history and social history research. Users should however, note that access to most of the full text certificates requires registration and payment. There is however, an interesting section on Famous Scots where records relating to famous Scottish poets (Robert Burns) inventors and politicians can be viewed online without payment. Other features of the site include research guides; guides to interpreting old handwriting; information on starting a family tree and information on archives in Scotland.
