Dear friends: For the most current update on viewing times/location of Liliane Lijn's "Solar Hills" trial on Saturday, July 5, please check "Upcoming Events: Jul 5: Solar Hills" at dmax.bampfa.berkeley.edu/blog/. This will be on the far right of the opening screen. I will post most recent info late evening July 4. Please check it out! Best, Marcia Tanner [log in to unmask] (mailto:[log in to unmask]) PS: FYI, DMAX, the digital media art program at BAM/PFA, is headed by new media curator Rick Rinehart. It "is based on principles of innovation, critical inquiry, social participation, and open access, and is an integral part of BAM/PFA’s plans for a new building that connects the campus and city of Berkeley. As the epicenter of the information revolution, the Bay Area is a natural home for digital media art programs that serve inquisitive audiences. DMAX fosters this broad-based community of seekers that overlaps with the art world, and also extends into academia, sciences, and industry. DMAX presents experimental exhibitions of new media art, new forms of educational and public programs, research into preservation and open access of digital art forms, and participatory forums for critical dialogue. "BAM/PFA is one of the first museums in the nation to recognize the emergence of new media culture with a digital art program. Among its distinguished peers, BAM/PFA's DMAX program is distinctive in several ways: the _scope_ (http://dmax.bampfa.berkeley.edu/#scope) of the program that encompasses _education_ (http://dmax.bampfa.berkeley.edu/#edu) , _collections_ (http: //dmax.bampfa.berkeley.edu/#coll) , _community_ (http://dmax.bampfa.berkeley.edu/#comm) , and _exhibitions_ (http://dmax.bampfa.berkeley.edu/#exhib) ; _the intellectual engine of UC Berkeley_ (http://dmax.bampfa.berkeley.edu/#engine) ; and the program's _character and values_ (http://dmax.bampfa.berkeley.edu/#character) " In a message dated 6/24/2008 12:19:17 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, Marcialart writes: Dear friends, Please mark your calendar for an extraordinary event happening on Saturday, July 5 in San Francisco. The British-based artist Liliane Lijn [ _www.lilianelijn.com/_ (http://www.lilianelijn.com/) ], together with her collaborator, Berkeley-based astrophysicist John Vallerga, are setting up a temporary installation of their larger work-in-progress -- SOLAR HILLS -- on Hawk Peak in the Marin Headlands on the morning of July 5. Two computer-guided spectroheliostats will focus and beam back the sun's light prismatically, through a shifting spectrum of colors, creating an array visible from Crissy Field in San Francisco. The planned time for the event is from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm. A crew from BBC TV in London will be filming the installation for a film on "Artists Working With Light" (it includes James Turrell, Robert Irwin and Anthony McCall as well as Lijn) for the Imagine Arts program to run on BBC 1 in October. Director of the film is Tim Kirby, assistant producer is Hattie Bowering and the presenter is Alan Yentob. The artist will be there to respond to viewers' questions. PLEASE NOTE: Successful installation is dependent on weather conditions and on receiving the necessary permits. We will have more definitive information regarding the above conditions 3 to 4 days prior to the event. I'll send an email update at that time with exact times and viewing location[s]. Should Hawk Peak be fogged in on the morning of July 5th, the alternative installation site will be on Grizzly Peak in Berkeley later that day. Hope you can make it! It'll be memorable.
