‘Darzi report opens way to a social enterprise model’ - Charities and social enterprises have been promised a greater role in providing contracts to the NHS under proposals unveiled yesterday by health minister Lord Darzi. His long-awaited report, High Quality Care for All, gives staff the "right to request" transfer from the NHS to a social enterprise model while keeping their pensions..Further reading

1- 'Deadliest' malaria rising in UK - More cases of the most dangerous type of malaria than ever before are being brought back to the UK from trips abroad, official figures show. A Health Protection Agency study identified 6,753 cases of falciparum malaria diagnosed in the country between 2002 and 2006..Further reading

 

2- Alzheimer's Awareness Week ( 06 - 12 Jul 2008 ) - The purpose of the Week is to raise public awareness and understanding about dementia, its causes and the impact that it has on people. 700,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia and many others are affected by the consequences. The exact causes of the disease are not yet known, but the biological process has been identified. Alzheimer's disease which is responsible for causing 55% of cases of dementia destroys cells in the brain. The resulting symptoms include memory problems, mood changes and communication problems..Further reading  

 

3- Sporting 'heart screening' call - Screening sportsmen for signs of hidden heart conditions could save lives, a study has concluded. Each year in the UK, hundreds of apparently fit people suffer 'sudden cardiac death'..Further reading

 

4- 20,000 unsuitable workers stopped from working with the vulnerable by Criminal Records Bureau - The figures for the year 2007 published today bring the total of unsuitable people prevented from working with vulnerable groups to more than 80,000 in the last four years. In addition to high levels of protection for children and vulnerable adults, the CRB has achieved record levels of customer satisfaction with 92 per cent of customers reporting they are pleased with the service they have received.. Further reading

 

5- Mother's junk food 'harms child' - Eating a poor diet when pregnant or breastfeeding may cause long-lasting health damage to the child, animal studies suggest..Further reading

 

6- Child strokes going 'undiagnosed' - Up to five children a day in the UK are suffering from undiagnosed strokes, new research suggests. Experts from Bristol University are studying what they say is a "striking lack of public and medical awareness" of childhood strokes..Further reading

1- NHS Choices: NHS Choices puts you in control of your healthcare. Their website has been developed to help you make choices about your health, from lifestyle decisions about things like smoking, drinking and exercise, through to the practical aspects of finding and using NHS services when you need them. It draws together the knowledge and expertise of:

·        the Information Centre for Health and Social Care,

·        the Healthcare Commission and many other organisations.

 

2- The Caroline Walker Trust - The Caroline Walker Trust is dedicated to the improvement of public health through good food. Established in 1988 to continue the work of the distinguished nutritionist, writer and campaigner Caroline Walker, the Trust is a charity which undertakes specific projects, funded by grants and donations. A major part of our work is to produce expert reports which establish nutritional guidelines for vulnerable groups - including children and older people.
