variety of settings through counselling, coaching, education and training to
actively enhance their employment prospects and quality of life. Adam`s

National Transplant Week ( 06 - 13 Jul 2008 ) is an annual
campaign to educate and inform front line medical staff and increase public
awareness of the positive benefits of Organ & Tissue Donation for
transplantation. Now in its 18th year the campaign is highlighting that today

people a week lose a limb through diabetes - A hundred people a
week in the UK have a lower limb amputated as a result of diabetes, warns
Diabetes UK today. The leading health charity says to reduce this figure
there is an urgent need for greater awareness of the impact of the condition,
which as well as lower limb amputation can lead to other devastating
complications such as heart attacks, stroke, blindness and kidney failure..Further

Minorities more likely to become Social Entrepreneurs -
Black, Asian and ethnic minority communities have higher levels of social
entrepreneurship than the white community, according to figures released today.
The study also found that while women are only half as likely as men to be
mainstream entrepreneurs, they are equally or more likely than men to be social

1- Ethnic Minority Cancer Awareness Week (7 – 13 July) is a new initiative from a collaboration of leading charities to raise awareness of cancer amongst ethnic minority groups. The Week was launched by Cancer Equality at their ‘Delivering Equality in Cancer Care-A Challenge for All’ conference in 2007. Following this a group of charities have come together to deliver a week of events to both raise cancer awareness and improve access to services amongst ethnic minorities. National Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Awareness Day on
24 July
2008 10:00 am – 5:00 pm at
Free Entry! The Sickle
Cell and Thalassaemia Centre are holding an open day as part of National
Awareness month to raise the profile of both these disorders. This is an
important event to help both the public and professionals to better understand
the effects of Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia. The event
will include interactive information stalls, presentations, health checks,

Manchester PCT has recently launched a public engagement programme called
“Talking Health”. (See
flyer) The idea is to start an ongoing conversation with patients, the
public and staff around developing local priorities for the provision of health
services. There is a survey that can be accessed via this web link: www.talkinghealth.net and Manchester PCT wants to hear
from all local black and ethnic minority residents! You
will be able to tell them about your: Perceptions of current NHS services, Views
on the key issues for improving health, Priorities and aspirations for health
and health services in the future There is also an automated telephone survey -

complete) Please encourage as many BME people as possible to complete the
