medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture I´m afraid I can´t answer your question, but could I extend the period of enquiry to the twelfth century, and the question to include that of creation of new archbishoprics (and bishoprics)? I´m particularly interested in the case of the foundation of Lund (1104), and the general question would be, what kind of authority is needed for new foundations of either sort? Presumably the pope has to approve a new archdiocese, but could, say, a council of bishops approve the split of existing dioceses into smaller ones? Of course, kings might take it into their hands to do the organizing themselves, as seems to have happened in Denmark at one point, my question is really, how, according to canon law (or usual practice) SHOULD such reorganization have been done? If there is for example a big German volume on the formation of new dioceses / archdioceses, I´d like to know of it. I am especially interested in discovering when the metropolitan church came to be known as the "mother church" of its province (and, for that matter, when the bishop's church came to be known as the "mother church" of its diocese). I suspect that this happened around the eighth or ninth century, but I am drawing a blank in all the usual bibliographies/reference works. Suggestions?
