COURSES:

JULY 2008

BUILDING AND DEPLOYING A CORPORATE TAXONOMY, Tuesday 15, £280+VAT(£350+VAT)

A Corporate Taxonomy is the backbone of an organization’s information architecture. Whether the focus is on records management, document management or knowledge management, a Corporate Taxonomy is key to effective storage and retrieval. A Corporate Taxonomy is different from a subject taxonomy in that it is a taxonomy of business activities. Corporate Taxonomies are therefore specific to an organisation and have to be custom-built.  This interactive workshop uses a blend of presentation, discussion and practical exercises to explain the purposes of a Corporate Taxonomy and to introduce delegates to technologies, techniques and tools for building and deploying them. Workshop Director: Bob Bater http://www.aslib.com/training/4/06.html

ELECTRONIC SERIALS MANAGEMENT, Wednesday 16, £260+VAT(£325+VAT)

This one-day course will give you an introduction to the theory and practice of the management of electronic serials and offers the opportunity to gain an understanding of the rapidly-changing serials environment as well as an insight into the practical day-to-day management issues relating to it.  Course Director: Caroline Moss-Gibbons http://www.aslib.com/training/4/10.html

INDEXING:PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE, Thursday 17. £260+VAT(£325+VAT)

Indexing is one of the best known of 'traditional' library/information activities. Its importance has not diminished in the digital age. On the contrary, indexing is of even more importance in digital environments, so that information can be efficiently found from sources such as the Internet, or intranets. Indexing is an important part of the broader process of metadata creation.   Many library/information workers are expected to index material, but not everyone is given sufficient training. This course covers general principles of indexing, and the indexing process, and also specific points of practice, in the indexing of all kinds of material, emphasising the value of controlled indexing languages. The relations between indexing and other ways of analysing and denoting content (abstracting, summarising, classifying, categorising etc.) are emphasised. The course also deals with understanding, and creating, indexing policies, which govern the way in which indexing is carried out. Course Director: Prof. David Bawden   http://www.aslib.com/training/4/16.html

NEGOTIATING ONLINE SUBSCRIPTIONS, Friday 18 July, afternoon, £150+VAT(£187.50+VAT)

It is tough out there at the moment. We all need to make an impression on our employers and one way we can achieve this is to save money. It is often awkward talking about money and this session gives practical guidance on how to broach the subject with the publisher. This session is aimed at anyone who has to deal with online resource renewals, new subscriptions or cancellations. The workshop provides practical tips and strategies you can really use. Delegates will be able to learn from the experience of the presenter as well as have the opportunity to discuss their own experiences.  Course Director: Fiona Fogden

British Company Law, Tuesday 23, £260+VAT(£325+VAT) http://www.aslib.com/training/1/01.html
'Very important, but far too difficult for non-specialists' is how company law is typically viewed. This course distils the key legal principles which govern corporate activity for those who lack the time to follow lengthy conventional legal courses. It also goes beyond setting out the formal legislative framework to examine how these rules are applied in practice in British companies, featuring copious real life examples and looking at actual company documents. The course also identifies sources for researching companies and their directors. Course Director: Chris Murphy

How to Motivate Your People Through Effective Staff Reviews, Wednesday 24, £230+VAT (£287.50+VAT)
http://www.aslib.com/training/2/12.html
Increasingly, line managers are expected to carry out performance reviews of their staff. Effective performance reviews can lead to motivated staff and improved performance. Poor reviews have a negative effect and can lead to de-motivated and unhappy teams. This course will give you the tools you need to carry out an effective review. The course takes a competency based approach to managing staff performance.  Course Director: Nicola Wise

Classification Practice, Thursday 25, £260+VAT(£325+VAT) http://www.aslib.com/training/4/04.html
If you have some experience of subject indexing, but need guidance or practice or want to refresh knowledge gained some time ago, this course will give you the skills needed. Participants are invited to bring typical material from their collections to form a group of items that can be considered in the practical sessions. Where an in-house scheme is used, it may be appropriate to bring a copy of the scheme to the course. Major themes throughout the course are your users, your collection and tailoring the approach to meet their needs. A pre-enrolment form is circulated prior to the course to ascertain the specialised indexing topics of interest to their participants. As far as possible the practical exercises will relate to these topics. This course is not aimed at complete beginners; they would benefit by taking Aslib's companion course “Basic Cataloguing and Indexing” prior to this course.   Course Director: James Shearer

Economics for the Real World: Understanding Economic Data, Tuesday 30, £260+VAT(£325+VAT) http://www.aslib.com/training/1/05.html
This course addresses the key economic principles that underpin business and government, bypassing the highly abstract and unrealistic components of much conventional economics training. It clarifies the issues and interprets the jargon in order to make economic theory relevant to business activity. The course aims to equip attendees with a practical understanding of the ways in which economists try to describe and explain the workings of the economy, the significance of the many types of economic data and how changes in them should be interpreted.   Course Director: Chris Murphy
