Subject: Pavements

Dear all

I wonder if anyone can advise me on a little puzzle I had on a recent visit to Dundee. Whilst there I noticed symbols carved on kerbstones through the city centre: crosses inside squares, crosses in squares with arrows, crosses without squares, squares without crosses etc, and never more than about 10- 15cm across. They are carved into the stone, and appear of some antiquity. I wondered if someone could tell me about these. I was interested to know whether they relate to quarrying or to the highway in some way. None of the locals I was with had even noticed them before, let alone knew what they were. There’s probably a book about them somewhere, and they are probably more widespread, though I can’t say I have noticed them anywhere else.
