Goldfish (now part of Barclays) have a habit of declining my credit card
charges irrationally and for no reason.

They just did it once again, rejecting a payment of £10 I made to
sipgate.co.uk (they said it could be suspicious as it was a German
company and 'high-risk'!).

I have asked for an explanataion of the automated decision taking used.
They have refused.

The ICO's website says ...

"Some fully automated decisions are exempt from these provisions. These
are where the decision is taken

     * in relation to entering or carrying out a contract, or
     * is authorised or required by an Act of Parliament, and
     * the decision results in the granting of a request you have made,

or

     * steps have been taken to safeguard your legitimate interests,
such as, there is an appeal to the decision."

It seems that they do not distinguish between 'unable to process at this
time' and 'card is rejected'.

Personally, I am beginning to fail to see the utility of dealing with
Barclays anymore for any purpose if you can't rely on the card being
accepted except randomly. But I'm interested in whether list-members
feel that their refusal to give me any information about the automated
decision taking they use is lawful under the Data Protection Act.

Has anyone got any comments?
