Apologies for cross posting.

Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery recently commissioned audience research with students and lecturers from FE & HE to inform the development of the Pre-Raphaelite Online Resource project. The entire Pre-Raphaelite collection is being digitised, including painting on canvas, works on paper, sculpture, designs for stained glass, textiles, tiles, printed books, unpublished artists’ and associates’ letters, notebooks relating to major patrons of the collection, and associated photographic material.

The audience research has now been completed by Illumina Digital. We were particularly interested in whether there was a demand for Web 2.0 features (short answer - not really). The research also looks at how this audience currently uses the web for research.

One of the interesting findings of the research is a perceived lack of 'scholarly' online resources and a concern that information on the web isn't trustworthy and although it might be used for a 'quick cheat' or a 'last resort' that it couldn't be referenced as a source in their work. JSTOR was the only notable exception mentioned in this research - this was universally recommended by students and lecturers.
